Scarron, Paul

Born in Paris, Paul Scarron, a bohemian, became a canon and was attached to the bishop of Mas. He became infirm but still continued to frequent the literary salons, and had married Françoise d'Aubigné, who would become Mme de maintenon. Scarron is the author of comedies that were much prized for their intrigue-filled buffoonery and for their verbal play—Jodelet ou le Maître valet (1645) and Don Japhet d'Arménie (1653). He also wrote a burlesque parody in octosyllables, Virgile travesti (1648-52), and Le Roman comique (1651-57).
